What is the UFC?
The UFC, or Ultimate Fighting Championship, is a mixed martial arts organization that is the largest of its kind in the world. It hosts some of the most prominent MMA fighters in the sport and features a number of different weight classes and rulesets. The organization has been around since 1993, when it was founded by Art Davie and Rorion Gracie.
What is MMA?
M Mixed Martial Arts is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide range of fighting techniques, from a mixture of martial arts traditions and non-traditions, to be used in competitions. The rules allow the use of striking and grappling techniques, both while standing and on the ground. Such competitions allow martial artists of different backgrounds to compete.
The History of the UFC
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion company based in the United States that is the largest MMA promoter in the world. The UFC produces events worldwide that showcase twelve weight divisions and abides by the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts. As of 2018, the UFC has held over 400 events. Dana White serves as the president of the UFC while its headquarters are in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The first recorded use of the term “mixed martial arts” was in a review of UFC 1 by television critic Howard Rosenberg in 1993. The term gained popularity when newfull contact rule systems were introduced to combat sports by the Gracie family in Brazil in the 1920s. The Gracies saved Vale Tudo from obscurity and helped spread it throughout Brazil before their immigrating to the United States in 1978. Mixed martial arts originally developed as a hybrid of various stand-up combat sports, particularly Karate, Boxing, Muay Thai, Wrestling, Judo and Jiu-Jitsu. Early professional mixed martial arts promoters such as Pat Miletich attempted to learn from and capitalize on Vale Tudo matches while attempting to distance themselves simultaneously from their Brazilian roots. These attempts at creating distance failed and controversy arose when organizations such as Shooto began promoting similar events with little regard to weight classes or rulesets thereby blurring the lines between highly skilled Vale Tudo competitors and beginner fighters who had little or no knowledge of submission grappling or groundfighting techniques. UCF 2 featured one such match between Gerard Gordeau and Teila Tuli which resulted in Gordeau’s teeth being knocked out of his mouth..
In 1993, energy drink manufacturer Red Bull became a major sponsor of many MMA promotions including UFC leading up to its purchase of a minority interest stake in 2001 followed by full purchase in 2005. In 1997, billboard entrepreneur Semaphore Entertainment Group (SEG) purchased an exhausted UWF that had been mired by numerous lawsuits filed by disgruntled former employees alleging unpaid wages which eventually led Semaphore Entertainment Group declaring bankruptcy thus allowing for its assets which included UWF’s tape library be sold off to Vince McMahon’s World Wrestling Federation (WWF) for $3 million at an auction taking place on February 21, 2001 with McMahon increasing SEG’s debt load by $15 million thus putting them further into debt bringing an end Semaphore Entertainment Group’s fifteen year history..
